The third graders have been learning to identify the different parts of speech. They participated in kinesthetic and multisensory grammar activities to reinforce this target skill. The students created color coded lists of the words they came across as they read leveled passages and select pages of their chapter books. Each part of speech was defined using a color, and we discussed the functions of these words within a sentence. Students learned the importance of constructing simple, compound, and complex sentences in their written pieces. To further reinforce this skill, students played the Grammar Hopscotch game. Each group of students drew the familiar Hopscotch pattern of rectangles on the ground, and then they proceeded to play. The rules followed those of the traditional game, with the exception that each square represented a different part of speech. Students called out a noun, pronoun, adverb, verb, conjunction, adjective, or article, depending on where the bean ban bear they threw landed. They had time to think of a word, as they hopped to the rectangle. They also had to use that word in a sentence. Students enjoyed both of these activities, and their grammar skills continue to improve. Categories (tags): Elementary
