Second graders finished an engaging lesson from Engineering is Elementary titled To Get to the Other Side: Designing Bridges. The unit started with reading the story, Javier Builds a Bridge, in which a boy named Javier faces a problem when a bridge to his fort broke. Throughout the story, Javier used the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, create, test, and improve a bridge design. After reading the story, students used their knowledge about force, balance, and stability to design and create their own bridge prototypes from classroom materials.
